Weak desire brings weak results

The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential... these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence.

Confucius

Desire! That's the one secret of every man's career. Not education. Not being born with hidden talents. Desire.

Bobby Unser, car racer

“The starting point of all achievement is DESIRE. Keep this constantly in mind. Weak desire brings weak results, just as a small fire makes a small amount of heat.”

Investing should be more like watching paint dry

“Investing should be more like watching paint dry or watching grass grow. If you want excitement, take $800 and go to Las Vegas.”

― Paul Samuelson

In Nick Murray book , SIMPLE Wealth , INEVITABLE Wealth he explains that investing should be like planting a tree. You plant , you watch , you put some water , you do nothing, you don't take her from the ground in the winter, during winter the tree does not grow and then in the spring and summer it grows again.

It gives you shade & fruit and when you die you leave it to your kids.

This is my tree in my house below

After disaster I had my first victory ever

After disaster in Stage 1 of TransPortugal I had my first victory ever in stage 6. TransPortugalMTB is a series of  8 Ultras in a Row. I did 55 hours last week on the bike. This year there was a lot of technical sections and I did an average of 18,5 km/h and finished 9th overall.

If you don't give up things change and from disaster I pulled out my first victory ever with help of my German friend Martin Crone.

It was one of the best moments of my life.

Never, never, never give up.

“Yes, but I have something he will never have…. Enough”

At a billionaire’s party Kurt Vonnegut informs his pal, Joseph Heller, that their host, a hedge fund manager, had made more money in a single day than Heller had ever earned from his popular novel Catch-22. Heller responds,“Yes, but I have something he will never have…. Enough”

"You might think you want an expensive car, a fancy watch, and a huge house. What you want is respect and admiration from other people, and you think having expensive stuff will bring it. It almost never does—especially from the people you want to respect and admire you.”

How to avoid an average life

Turn off the TV that is step 1.

  1. Watch TV. Spend countless hours watching television. Aim for at least 3-4 hours a day. Maybe one in the morning and definitely once you get home from work.
  2. Watch the News. News = fear. The more we let fear control us, the more average our life will be. That's why we watch the news. The news is our fear. When we start feeling confident and secure, just make sure to go to CNN and Fox to feel worse.
  3. Don't read books. Books? I stopped learning after College. I definitely won't be reading non fiction books. Everyone knows self help is a scam. I can't possibly improve.
  4. Wait until the New Year to create goals. Everyone knows this. Goals are only to be made as New Years Resolutions. It doesn't matter that the last 20 times I created them, they all failed. This year is different.
  5. No discipline. My word means nothing. It's less responsibility. I can do the important tasks, tomorrow. Why stress over it? I'd rather feel the pain of regret.
  6. Think you are special. I'm a special snowflake. My mom told me it and she knows better than everyone.
  7. Go on diets. Summer is coming! Might as well start this new fat blaster diet. It doesn't matter what I eat as long as I'm dieting.
  8. Hate Mondays. Ugh, Mondays are the worst. Back to work at the job I hate. The weekend is so far away! Sucks.

As you start to walk on the way, the way appears

Just start, and when you start everything changes for the best....just do it

I can live for two months on a good compliment

fake compliments are horrible , but if you can congratulate your kids for something well done, make a party it's even better.

shareholder wealth is concentrated in very few stocks

If you find a winner , do nothing, sit

“The results also help to explain why active strategies, which tend to be poorly diversified, most often underperform,” says Bessembinderwho found that the largest returns come from very few stocks overall — just 86 stocks have accounted for $16 trillion in wealth creation, half of the stock market total, over the past 90 years. All of the wealth creation can be attributed to the thousand top-performing stocks, while the remaining 96 percent of stocks collectively matched one-month T-bills.

It never was my thinking that made the big money for me. It was always my sitting. Got that? My sitting tight!

what could ruin my way of life fast?

How to lose less if there is inflation?

no money in Bonds & deposits, cash etc... most in stocks (some stocks can do very well), Gold, houses, bitcoins, commodities etc...

what could ruin my way of life fast?

besides lack of health if oil price doubles that would ruin my way of life, not my life of course but I would do much less. Mobility is key for my way of life.

I need to make money when there is inflation because all sort of bad things happen when inflation exists, insecurity, robbery, etc...

Is there a reason to think inflation might come back? YES

We have control over almost nothing

We have control over the way we react to what happens to us, yes we can control this. Only this. The rest is out of our hands.

Of all men's miseries the bitterest is this: to know so much and to have control over nothing.

Why Cities Live forever and Companies Die a lot and faster

The strength that comes from human collaboration is the central truth behind civilisation’s success and the primary reason why cities exist we must free ourselves from our tendency to see cities as their buildings, and remember that the real city is made of flesh, not concrete.

— Edward Glaeser

Cities don't make people poor; they attract poor people. The flow of less advantaged people into cities from Rio to Rotterdam demonstrates urban strength, not weakness. A wealth of research confirms the importance of face-to-face contact. Edward Glaeser.

From John Brokman
And in fact, one of the great things about cities is that it supports crazy people. You walk down Fifth Avenue, you see crazy people. There are always crazy people. Well, that's good. Cities are tolerant of extraordinary diversity. ...
This is in complete contrast to companies. The Google boys in the back garage so to speak with ideas of the search engine, were no doubt promoting all kinds of crazy ideas and maybe having even crazy people around them.
Well, Google is a bit of an exception, because it still tolerates some of that. But most companies start out probably with some of that buzz. But the data indicates that at about 50 employees to a hundred that buzz starts to stop. A company that was more multi dimensional, more evolved, becomes uni dimensional. It closes down.

Cities nurture anonymity, which liberates people to pursue their dreams. they are magnets for individuals and business.they are diverse, in terms of activities they support, skills they generate, and populations they attract. They create economies of scale and scope. They produce complex networks of exchange, including with other cities. Not least they can supply transportation, communications, water supply, sewerage, energy, health and other services far more efficientely than either rural or sprawling suburban areas.

It is not always the same thing to be a good man and a good citizen

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The harrowing Holocaust drama “ The Zone of Interest,” which explores questions of complicity while depicting the mundane lives of a Nazi family in their home adjacent to the Auschwitz death camp, won the Academy Award for best international film.

During Covid some people made the life miserable for non vaccinated people. These people would have obeyed Hitler also. They do anything for security and safety. They are good citizens but not good people.

In my country some people thought it was a good idea to close school and do home schooling by zoom. These people are still around.

The Milgram experiment proved that people will likely follow orders, even harmful ones, when instructed by an accepted authority figure.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Beginning on August 7, 1961, a series of social psychology experiments were conducted by Yale University psychologist Stanley Milgram, who intended to measure the willingness of study participants to obey an authority figure who instructed them to perform acts conflicting with their personal conscience. Participants were led to believe that they were assisting an unrelated experiment, in which they had to administer electric shocks to a "learner". These sham or fake electric shocks gradually increased to levels that would have been fatal had they been real.

The Illusion of I’ll Be Happy When

If I had a masters I would have a better career, this is simply false. You do much better in life if you start working as an  apprentice of a very famous master and stay with him for many years , perhaps one day you inherit the business. Yes it's very typical for a father not to have kids interested in following the father footsteps.

No meetings with mobile phones

Also, mobile phones and emails have certain rules: No, it’s not 24/7, because here in the company, you start at 8 AM, and at 5:30 PM you are forbidden to work any further. No emails can be sent to more than two addresses, just one or two. No group mailing. Why must a single email be read by 10 different people, unless it’s the 10 people who are interested in that specific issue? In order to disperse responsibility?

Here, we have no meetings with mobile phones. No one is allowed to bring them into the meeting room. You must look me in the eye. You must know things by heart. You must know all of your business with a 1 to 2 percent error rate. It is also training for your mind. It is also a question of respect, because I have never called someone on a Saturday or a Sunday. No one is allowed to do so. We must discover this, because if individuals rest properly, then it is better.

In 15 years of bike racing I quit once. After that I blame myself until today it was a really bad decision. besides that I never quit either in marriage or in business sometimes even after things are behind repair...

On that day on the bike I spent the first 3 hours with an Heart rate of 170  and then above 160 until I quit after 5 hours . I eat poorly and my brain was not functioning well with lack of sugar, I thought I was doing very badly when in retrospect they told me I crossed Marão mountain  in the top 10, I was completely empty and without food. On that day I did a lot of mistakes. Too fast, not enough food etc...

besides that I quit Transportugal Roads but to go to the Hospital and the bike was ruined.

I hope I will never quit again. I hope the phrase if you quit once you became a quieter does not apply to me!!!

When people have everything perhaps they don't have kids . Or perhaps the cost of living is so high that we need both parents to work a full job and kids are a huge expense if you have a full time job.
