It's impossible to compete it's better to be different
From the ECONOMISTTHE odds of becoming an American astronaut have always been slim. But this year the competition will be cosmically difficult: over 18,300 people have applied to join NASA’s next astronaut class, over double the previous record in 1978 and almost three times the number that applied for the most recent class, in 2012. The would-be starmen and women will jockey for up to 14 spots.
In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.

the only way to have a chance in our world you have to be different. There is too much competition. If you have the same education the same schools the same background you can be replaceable by thousands of people. Have something no one has! you might be picked because of that.
