Bronnie Ware is an Australian nurse who spent several years working in palliative care, caring for patients in the last 12 weeks of their lives

Here are the top five regrets of the dying, as witnessed by Ware:
1. I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.
"This was the most common regret of all. When people realise that their life is almost over and look back clearly on it, it is easy to see how many dreams have gone unfulfilled. Most people had not honoured even a half of their dreams and had to die knowing that it was due to choices they had made, or not made. Health brings a freedom very few realise, until they no longer have it."
2. I wish I hadn't worked so hard.
"This came from every male patient that I nursed. They missed their children's youth and their partner's companionship. Women also spoke of this regret, but as most were from an older generation, many of the female patients had not been breadwinners. All of the men I nursed deeply regretted spending so much of their lives on the treadmill of a work existence."
3. I wish I'd had the courage to express my feelings.
"Many people suppressed their feelings in order to keep peace with others. As a result, they settled for a mediocre existence and never became who they were truly capable of becoming. Many developed illnesses relating to the bitterness and resentment they carried as a result."
4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.
"Often they would not truly realise the full benefits of old friends until their dying weeks and it was not always possible to track them down. Many had become so caught up in their own lives that they had let golden friendships slip by over the years. There were many deep regrets about not giving friendships the time and effort that they deserved. Everyone misses their friends when they are dying."
5. I wish that I had let myself be happier.
"This is a surprisingly common one. Many did not realise until the end that happiness is a choice. They had stayed stuck in old patterns and habits. The so-called 'comfort' of familiarity overflowed into their emotions, as well as their physical lives. Fear of change had them pretending to others, and to their selves, that they were content, when deep within, they longed to laugh properly and have silliness in their life again."

The higher the state tax rate, the greater the migration outward.

Thursday, April 27, 2017 Francisco Carneiro 0 Comments

From Martin Amstrong
The US Census report has shown that the net migration from the New York City area has surged during 2016, and that even included myself. Indeed, much more people are leaving the New York region than any other major metropolitan area in the country. Since 2010, the New York area has lost almost 4.5% of its population. This included New Jersey, Connecticut, Long Island, and the lower Hudson Valley. The number of people who left in 2015 was 187,034. Last year, 2016, that number jumped to 223,423. The number of international immigrants settling in the tri-state area declined from 181,551 to 160,324. The international migration has slowed and this trend means that taxes will only rise.
Meanwhile, Cook County, Illinois has lost more population than any other county in the United States from July 2015 to July 2016, according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau report. Clearly, the highest taxed states are losing the most people. Nevertheless, the data clearly shows that the higher the state tax rate, the greater the migration outward.
The State of New York as a whole lost 95,591 people and California came in second losing 93,915 with New Jersey losing 76,175, Illinois lost 52,804, and Michigan losing 47,347.

The three states at the top of the list for destinations are Texas posting a gain of 109,887 people, Florida 61,395, and Colorado 41,501.

Why using someone with experience if we can use someone that is clueless!

Think, for example, of the damage done to the governance of Britain by the tradition of moving ministers - the most powerful men and women in the country - from department to department without giving them the opportunity to develop an adequate knowledge base in any of them. It is estimated that the average tenure of a ministerial post in recent years in Britain has been 1.7 years. John Reid, the long serving member of Tony Blair's government, was moved from department to department no less than seven times in seven years. This is no less absurd than rotating Tiger Woods from Golf to football to ice hockey to baseball and expecting him to perform expertly in every arena.

Bounce, The Hidden logic of success, Matthew Syed

what can i say! in my country is very typical of putting someone with zero experience in charge. Rotating people around is other national pastime. BCP one of the biggest banks in Portugal use to do this.

Stop guessing ! Do what is working instead of doing what should work!

"About six or seven years ago, Google launched ads on Gmail," Cobley explained. "In our search we have ads on the side, little blue links that go to other websites: we had the same thing on gmail. But we recognised that the shades of blue in those two different products were slightly different when they linked to ads.
"In the world of the hippo, you ask the chief designer or the marketing director to pick a blue and that's the solution. In the world of data you can run experiments to find the right answer.
"We ran '1%' experiments, showing 1% of users one blue, and another experiment showing 1% another blue. And actually, to make sure we covered all our bases, we ran forty other experiments showing all the shades of blue you could possibly imagine.
"And we saw which shades of blue people liked the most, demonstrated by how much they clicked on them. As a result we learned that a slightly purpler shade of blue was more conducive to clicking than a slightly greener shade of blue, and gee whizz, we made a decision.

"But the implications of that for us, given the scale of our business, was that we made an extra $200m a year in ad revenue."
The form of testing Google undertook is known as A/B testing (offering users two different versions of a site and picking the most effective one); this particular battle was widely seen as a turning point for the company, the moment it sided with engineers against designers. In 2009, Doug Bowman, then the company's top designer, cited it as part of the reason for his departure.

Some random Ideas !

The starting point is that the British are already inflicting losses on the EU through the very act of leaving. As a result, EU citizens will lose the automatic right to move to the UK, the EU will lose legal jurisdiction in Britain and it will lose a substantial contributor to its budget. The EU will also lose face. And, if things really go wrong, the EU could lose its very existence, as other nations follow Britain out of the door.Faced with all these losses, actual and potential, the EU is determined that Britain must suffer more than the organisation it is leaving.
Gideon Rachman, FT today

Next time you drop into a branch of Bank of America, do not be alarmed if there is nobody there to greet you. Or if there is nobody there at all.
The second-biggest bank by assets in the US has begun to experiment with completely unmanned branches — part of a drive to keep costs as low as possible, while providing customers with enough technology to do a lot of simple tasks themselves. If they want something more complex — plan for retirement, start a small business — they are steered into a side room, where they can videoconference with specialists sitting in call centres.
Ben McLannahan, FT today

Why Amazon is so compelling?

Tuesday, April 04, 2017 Francisco Carneiro 0 Comments

People are embracing mobile “at extraordinary speed”, says Stephen Bird, chief executive of Citigroup’s global consumer bank, which has pared its US network to half a dozen core cities where it has a high share of deposits. “We believe the model of the future must be predominantly digital with a lean footprint.”
But banks cannot do away with bricks and mortar entirely, as the best channel for picking up new depositors remains the humble branch. That is why some are retooling their branches as centres for advice, removing transactional staff completely — like BofA — or upgrading tellers to financial advisers.Capital One, for example, has opened 18 branches masquerading as coffee shops, where young “ambassadors” clad in J Crew-style jeans and navy blazers offer no-strings consultations — along with a cut-price cup of Peet’s coffee.

Ben McLannahan, FT today

Why Amazon is doing so well?

I think it's not only the size of the offer, the prices and the convenience. It's the advice. Yes in Amazon i read the comments of people that already bought the product and i don't do stupid mistakes so often The advice the sales guy from any organization lacks independence and quality.

Banks can improve the experience by offering open platform but besides that they can offer decent advice. That is the real business. To offer quality advice. The only quality advice must be based on science and hard data and client knowledge (know your client)

Just do it

Monday, April 03, 2017 Francisco Carneiro 0 Comments

The ceramics teacher announced on opening day that he was dividing the class into two groups. All those on the left side of the studio, he said, would be graded solely on the quantity of work they produced, all those on the right solely on its quality.
His procedure was simple: on the final day of class he would bring in his bathroom scales and weigh the work of the “quantity” group: fifty pound of pots rated an “A”, forty pounds a “B”, and so on. Those being graded on “quality”, however, needed to produce only one pot – albeit a perfect one – to get an “A”.
Well, came grading time and a curious fact emerged: the works of highest quality were all produced by the group being graded for quantity. It seems that while the “quantity” group was busily churning out piles of work – and learning from their mistakes – the “quality” group had sat theorizing about perfection, and in the end had little more to show for their efforts than grandiose theories and a pile of dead clay.

Art & Fear by David Bayles and Ted Orland

yes just try & try, hopefully with low investment because if you do a big project and it goes down the drain it costs a lot. small experiments it's the way forward.

small experiments.
