The start is very very important, if you start in a huge organization and you report to some minor minor guy it's a big disadvantage, if like Leonardo Da Vinci you  go to work as an apprentice in Verrocchio atelier/shop for more than 10 years, you learn from the master. 

I started in a very small bank with less than 150 people and reported to the top people all my life including the CEO,  I think that was key.

If you're early on in your career and they give you a choice between a great mentor or higher pay, take the mentor every time. It's not even close. And don't even think about leaving that mentor until your learning curve peaks.
