If you want to get each individual's honest opinion, you don't want that opinion to be influenced by others who are present, much less allow a group to coordinate what they are going to say.
Meetings can be useful if they are short and the purpose is to put everybody on the same page. The boss says this is what we are going to do. Like in the NYPD movies where they have a short meeting at 8 am where the Sargent says what they are going to do. Meetings to decide what to do are a waste of time.
